I am Jane, mom of Finnegan (2) and Remington (4 months in this pic) --- the inspiration behind the silly illustrated hedgehogs. I live in Dallas with one hubby, two boys, three dogs, and five chickens. Yes, it is a surprise to everyone, neighbors included, that Dallas has no zoning restrictions against hens (only roosters).
The ladies have been a huge hit with the neighborhood and we get daily visits from kids and adults alike. We don't have any hedgehogs.
Painting is my passion and I have been at it for more than 15 years. It started with oil on canvas during a summer in college to provide a right-brain counterweight to my EE studies.
Grandpa skipping rocks in Scotland, 20" x 16", oil on canvas
Then moved on to a summer in San Diego during law school of 5-10 minute watercolor studies of live models at a weekend open studio. Sketching returned me to watercolor and I accumulated enough pieces to host a show (my first and only) in the professor's lounge.
Untitled, 12" x 16", watercolor, SOLD (to my civpro professor)
I recently dabbled in acrylics and really like its quick drying properties. Here is a piece from a trip to Kauai with the hubs that is now hanging in our dining room.
Poi'pu Beach, 24" x 36", acrylic on canvas
Since the kiddos came, watercolor has become my preferred medium because it's a shorter time commitment, quick to pack up, and easy to hide from tiny prying fingers.
Art is my balance to the craziness and rigamarole of life. And drawing rambunctious hedgehogs doing hilarious things helps me to focus on the cuteness aspect of child rearing when they are driving their mama crazy!!
Thanks for reading and getting to know me. I'll conclude with a painting by Joan Miro that has stuck with me since I first saw it at the Met in 2005.
